Jayne’s Hat

I’m a gamer and a geek. Since most gamers are guys and also irresponsible, I’ve earned the title of “Space Mom.” One of my friends wanted a hat that was made by “Space Mom,” so I asked him what he wanted. He decided that he wanted a copy of the hat that Jayne Cobb wears in an episode of the epic but short lived TV series Firefly. So I made it for him. I’m really happy with how it turned out. I referenced a pattern someone else had done just as a guide since I was not sure how to shape the hat (I have never made a winter hat in this shape before). I’m super happy with how it came out!

I’ve also never made a pom pom before. It was incredibly easy (thank you Youtube!), and I love how the colors look together.

The hat is actually really easy to make. Here’s the pattern. Enjoy!

Materials needed:

Yarn: 1 skein of each of the following Knit Picks Brava Worsted: You can use any worsted weight yarn that you like. I just love the colors of the Brava Worsted.

  • Canary (Color A)
  • Orange (Color B)
  • Paprika (Color C)

Needles:

  • US Size 7 & US Size 8 circular needles (16″ or 24″ will work)
  • US Size 8 double pointed needles
  • US Size 8 straight needles

Additional tools:

  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  •  Scissors
  • Pom Pom Maker (Your hand will work too)

Gauge: 4.5 stitches x 5 rows = 1 inch in stockinette on size 8 needles

Finished size: 23″ circumference

Directions:

CO 104 sts with Orange (Color B) yarn. Place stitch marker in between the first and last stitches to mark the end of the round. Join and work in the round in K1P1 rib knit for 1 inch, then switch to stockinette and continue until orange section measures a total of 4 inches. Switch to yellow (Color A) yarn and continue in stockinette stitch for another 4 inches.

Shaping the hat: SKP every stitch until 6 stitches remain. You will need to switch to DPNs during this process. When 6 stitches remain, cut a 12″ tail. Pull tail through the stitches and tie in a knot. Weave tail in, trimming the length if necessary.

Using all three colors of yarn, make pom pom & attach. If you need help THIS is the video I watched.

For the ear flaps: Pick up 18 stitches with Paprika (Color C) yarn where you cast on.Knit in stockinette stitch for 18 rows. Then decrease every row. On RS, SSK at beginning of row, and K2TOG at end of row. On WS, P2TOG at beginning and end of row. Continue decreasing until one stitch remains. Tie off. Count 18 stitches and then pick up another 18 stitches and make second ear flap like the first. Cut two 6″ lengths of yarn (Color C), and pull one through the bottom of each ear flap. Make sure they are even in length, and tie a knot to secure them. Weave in any loose ends and enjoy!

Abbreviations:

CO= Cast on

K1P1 = Knit 1 stitch, Purl 1 stitch

P2TOG = Purl two together

RS = Right side

SKP = Slip Knit Pass
